SYDNEY - A pair of influential magazines have ranked Cape Breton among North America's best vacation destinations.
The August issue of Gentleman's Quarterly (GQ) classes Cape Breton as the No. 2 Summer Escape, while Travel and Leisure lists the island as No. 2 in the "Islands, Continental U.S. and Canada" category of their August issue.
In recent years it has become commonplace to find Cape Breton ranked by many travel magazines. However, the GQ article is a pleasant surprise for Parks Canada officials.
"They found us," said Mark Sajatovich, a Parks Canada marketing officer.
"It was not something that anyone on this end had actually gone out to recruit them."
Sajatovich said features of Cape Breton have been part of about 36 editorials since April. This press is likely what caught the attention of GQ editors.
"What GQ does is effectively take the message that Travel and Leisure magazine has put out by the traveling public and broadcast that more into the mind of the general public. All of a sudden the message is not just that Cape Breton is a popular favourite of travelers, here is something that the whole world should enjoy."
The GQ article is found in the magazine's travel section under summer escapes. Pueblo, Mexico is ranked No. 1, followed by Cape Breton and Livingstone, Montana.
Travel and Leisure puts Cape Breton behind only Vancouver Island in its list of the Top 5 islands in the Continental U.S. and Canada, ahead of Mount Desert Island in Maine.
Destination Cape Breton general manager Sandra MacDonald called the GQ article "wonderful and new" publicity for Cape Breton.
"It is another one of those things we can market and say is original to Cape Breton Island," she said.
"It is another one in the long list of recognizable things that makes us unique and stand out from the rest of the world. It is great news for everyone."
The valuable attention will help improve upon the current and future tourism seasons.
"Tourism continues to be our No. 1 revenue generator, for sure, on Cape Breton Island. I think we are learning to foster it more and hopefully will continue to watch it grow."
The circulation for each magazine is over one million copies per issue across North America.
